Even at Honyama in Shizuoka, Ashikubo is an especially famous area for growing mountain tea.
This traditionally-steamed sencha is composed of splendid leaves that are perfectly rolled into long, thin needles. In addition to their surprising physical beauty in a tea this price, the leaves are also wonderfully scented.
Infusing this sencha produces a liquor with sweet fragrances, warm scents with a mellowness that appears in the mouth in tones of nuts and vanilla.
The liquor is light and airy, without the slightest touch of astringency. Over several infusions, the lightness and mellowness remain, but a complex range of fragrances continues to be expressed in the length in the mouth, and very subtle notes of yellow fruits appear.
A fine mountain sencha at an incredibly modest price.
